Military service prepared West for leadership on baseball team

Max West’s journey has taken him from Singapore to Princeton, from combat diver to catcher.

West, a senior majoring in English and catcher for the Tigers baseball team, spent two and half years in the elite Naval Diving Unit of the Singapore Navy, fulfilling the republic’s mandatory military service requirement before coming to the University.

West’s age, discipline and hard work have made him a valuable member of the team in a number of ways, coach Scott Bradley said.

“Because he is a little bit older than some of the guys, he really is a resource to the younger players,” Bradley said. “He’s just so disciplined in his approach to life. … Max is one of our main guys, you know, behind the plate and in our lineup.“

West attributes his success with the team to his time in the military.

“I grew stronger mentally, far more stronger physically, and that I think is what gave me a chance to be able to play college baseball at all,” West said.
